Nico Smit was born in South Africa where he still lives today with his wife and two children.
His interest in photography started 28 years ago with nature, photo travel and sport as his favourite photographic subjects.
As an academic Professor in the field of rangeland ecology at the University of the Free State, he has traveled extensively in southern Africa. A book on the Acacia trees of South Africa was published during 1999 and two more books are currently in the process of being published.
His photos are regularly used in magazines and newspapers and he has won numerous awards in photographic competitions.
Nico is also a long standing member of the Photographic Society of Southern Africa (PSSA), who have awarded him four Associateships, two Fellowships, Expert and the highest award of Master of the Society.
He has also won the Impala trophy of the PSSA a total of five times (3 times in the colour slide division and two times in the e-photography division). Nico also contributes to photography in the form of lectures and workshops and acts as judge at National and International Salons and photographic competitions.
