 William Webb Ellis, or Bill to his friends, was a student in the private boys' school in Warwickshire called Rugby School, in the town of Rugby from 1820-25. His statue stands in front of the school with its beautiful, ornate brickwork.

Tradition has it that the game of rugby was born when he picked up the round soccer ball in 1823 and ran with it during a football training session.
